2023 Year In Review

2023 Recap

We’re fast approaching the end of 2023. It was a great year in some ways. I felt the Lord’s provision and direction in a lot of different areas this year. I got to work with some great clients. Really helped some people along the way. Made new friends and new clients. Experienced God’s goodness and mercy in many areas.

A lot of people are making plans and resolutions for the new year. And while we can and should work towards goals each year and hope and pray for good things to happen. We also have to be obedient and listen to God’s leading. I’m not suggesting that we should pray for bad things, but I promise you this, God’s blessings are not always health, wealth, and prosperity. I find real blessings are more often direction changes that test and strengthen our faith in his good and perfect will for the lives of those who love the Lord and are called according to his purpose.

The economy is tough. A lot of things are not as we would like them to be in the world. There have been many times this year when I wasn’t sure where my next project would come from, yet he provided over and above what I needed. And he allowed me to capture some of his majesty on display in the process. That’s such a blessing.

The first image in the video below is of a wren that nested in a gourd behind my house. A good friend of my dad’s grew them last year. I cleaned a few of them up and hung them here and there. This little chain of events led up to this photo. God used us to provide for this little defenseless wren. And in Matthew 6:26 we’re told, “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”

Ponder that a little bit.

We’re certainly responsible for our actions and are to work hard and make wise decisions. But we’re not called to work harder and be smarter on our own. We’re to seek wisdom from the Lord and his righteousness and then the king who owns the cattle on a thousand hills is sure to give us all that we need. And when our heart’s highest desire is for him then we are sure to find what we’re after. That means we’re called to live by faith and be holy as he is holy. We’re called to be the light in a dark world. The economy is crazy and life is full of twists and turns. But we are to let our light so shine before men that they may see our good deeds and honor our Father in heaven. Matthew 15:16.

So with that in mind, I hope you have a fantastic 2024. Look forward to working with you in 2024!!!

Super moon photography tips for the Super blue Moon August 2023

You’ve heard the phrase “once in a blue moon”. Well, the August 30th Super blue moon will be the closest full moon of the year, making it appear much brighter and larger than normal. Different full moons throughout the year have different names and this full moon is called the Blue Moon. Not to be confused with the popular beer brand, a blue moon occurs only when the pattern of days in a year means there are 13 full Moons instead of the usual 12. But this will also be a super blue moon, making it even more rare. The previous one occurred in 2009. This will be the last super Blue Moon until 2037 so you don’t want to miss it.

I’ve taken tons of full moon photos over the years. Here are a few of my top tips for viewing or photographing the full moon.

Start shooting early.

To get the biggest, fullest moon possible, you’ll want to shoot it as soon as it pops up over the horizon. This year that will be August 30th at 7:49 pm here in south Arkansas. Now in the area that I live in, we’re mostly flat land with a lot of timber so it’s often hard to get long clear views of the horizon, but just do your best to capture it right after moon rise. The closer the moon is to the horizon, the more of the earth’s atmosphere that the moonlight has to pass through. This creates diffusion which spreads the light farther and makes it appear much larger and it picks up an oranger view as light refracts off of moisture in the atmosphere.

Incorporate other features in your moon photography.

While the moon is brilliant in it’s reflective radiance as it is, it always helps to incorporate other foreground elements into your photography for an even more interesting photo. By shooting early, you’ll be able to capture trees, buildings, and even play around with putting people into your photos.

Camera settings

Shoot telephoto. Have you ever shot a moon photo with your phone and even though it appears huge in person, your photo is less than impressive? Wide-angle lenses like your camera phone or even when used on high-quality professional cameras just can’t capture the beauty of the moon in its fullest. The compression that we love about telephoto lenses is really needed to bring out the details or enhance what we can see with just our naked eye. I recommend shooting at 200mm or higher if you can. There may be some exceptions to that depending on what you are trying to do, but that’s where I’d start.

Moon photography is not typical nighttime photography. The full moon is actually very bright. While you’d typically shoot with very slow shutter speeds and wide-open apertures at night to gather more light, with full moon photos, I often shoot at higher f-stops. F-8 or above. You can of course shoot wide open but finding focus at night can sometimes be a challenge so shooting at higher f-stops gives you more room for forgiveness if your focus point isn’t perfect. This means for slower shutter speeds sometimes. However, since you’ll be shooting telephoto anyway, I’d recommend shooting with a sturdy tripod. This will alleviate problems with camera shake both at longer focal lengths and with those slow shutter speeds.

Lastly, just enjoy the view.

I love photos but sometimes we get caught up in the technical details of creating a photo. Remember that take some time to enjoy the moment. I hope you get to enjoy the moon with people you love. Remember that He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down. The moon and stars to govern the night; His love endures forever

Online modeling competition garners votes to raise funds. Here is how it works.

The other day, I shared a link to my personal Facebook page where a friend/client is using some of my photos for an online modeling competition called “Ms. Starts and Stripes“. Turns out I have three friends and two clients who have entered the competition. Jessica McGeeCambry Thurmon, and Charlotte Rockett are all in the competition to be “Ms. Stars and Stripes”. The winner gets $25,000 a magazine spread in STAR Magazine and will act as a spokesperson for a year traveling to events like like the PBR and others

To win, competitors submit photos and a bio where they solicit votes from friends through social media. Each competitor gets one free vote each day and can buy extra votes to raise money for a charity. In this case, the charity is American Royal, a Kansas City based nonprofit that hosts rodeo and equine events as well as does a lot of Ag education outreach.

This is not my first involvement with this type of contest. Last year, I did some photos for Santanna Mitchell who competed in the “Ms. Health and Fitness” competition. It had the same format but was based around fitness and supported a first responders charity.

However, there have been some questions raised about whether these competitions and charities are on the up and up. Some of the information online appears vague and the competition asks for credit card information which kind of raises some red flags for many. If my photos are going to be involved with something and if I’m going to ask my friends to help vote or support something, I wanted to make absolutely sure that it is in fact legit. So, I did some digging.

First, I looked all over the websites for clues as to who is connected with the organization. I found two contacts other than the organization itself to verify what was online. First I contacted American Royal. They were aware of the competition but their PR person had only been with them for a couple of months and wasn’t fully up to speed yet on the exact ins and outs of the competition or fundraising efforts but told me a company called Colossal is involved with the competition. They are in effect the “operator” of these types of competitions. Colossal is a for-profit online marketing company. They take a percentage of the funds raised, but I believe around 70-75% of the funds raised go to the chosen charity.

After going through the Colossal website and social pages, I had more questions than answers because everything was recently posted. But I found that they were connected with a non-profit organization called DTCare. I left a voicemail with them asking for information.

I then reached out to Natalie Kovarik via e-mail. Natalie is listed as the host of the competition. Natalie is an influencer in the ranching/agriculture world with a large Instagram following. However, I didn’t immediately see any connection between here and the competition. I didn’t hear back from Natalie directly, but just a short time after e-mailing her, I received an e-mail directly from the MS Stars and Stripes organization.

Natalie had obviously forwarded my e-mail to them because they knew that I had contacted both Natalie and the American Royal. I still had a few questions in my mind, but the e-mail confirmed that a lot of what was going on was in fact legitimate. I responded to their e-mail and I did have a few more serious questions that I was looking for answers to.

I guess my due diligence had set off a fire within the organization because the next day, not only did I hear from the Ms. Stars and Stripes organization, but I’m pretty sure I received phone calls from virtually everyone involved in any level of the organization. The first phone calls that I got were from DTCare.

DTCare is a US-based charity also doing some cool charity work overseas in Poland, Ukraine, and other regions. I’m not an accountant so I don’t exactly understand this part, but I believe for some tax purposes, the funds raised pass through another nonprofit partner called DTCare. I don’t think DTCare is using any of the funds but DTcare is then passing the funds on to the American Royal or whatever the chosen charity is for the competition. While on the phone I got to speak directly to one of DTCare’s accountants and another Administrative staffer who filled me in on so much of what DTCare is doing and specifically how they work with Colossal.

Next, I received a phone call from a guy from Ms. Stars and Strips competition. He went over all of the concerns I’d raised about the organization, the Ms. Health and Fitness competition, and several other similar competitions/fundraisers that they work with. They have now been running these types of events for the past 8 years.

Before the day was over I got a call from the founder of DTCare. We had a great conversation about how the organization works and other things they are involved with.

I can say that I’ve never had so many people act so quickly and so fully address concerns with any organization. After all of this, to the best of my knowledge, Yes, this is a legit competition. It is a legit charity. If you are so inclined, go vote for one of these girls and help a charity. I don’t remember exactly how far or how much money has been raised through them, but I do know that last year, Santanna Mitchell made it pretty far in the competition last year.

If I can help anyone build their personal brand or help a charity with my photos, I’d love to work with you.

Turnip Green Blooms with Bee

Gods Garden

…if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will moved …Matthew 17:20

Last year I prepared my fall garden; tilling in the remaining summer tomato vines and the last of my green beans. I planned out my rows and what to plant. I dug out some mustard seed that had been collected from the previous years garden.

Mustard greens are similar to turnip greens or collard greens but not nearly as cold tolerant. As collards experience their first frost, the flavors get better and sweeter. Mustards are not the like that. The frost usually kills them or at least knocks them back considerably to the point where you can’t really harvest them.

It was early fall. actually more like late summer and the first frost was still a good month or two away so we had plenty of time to get mustard in the ground and mature to harvest so I put in a row.

South Arkansas is not known for cold weather. This year our first frost would come later than normal. Our first frost would not come until the last of November, first of December. This deep freeze really stunted our mustard greens.

By this time we’d already had several batches of mustard‘s and our collards and turnip greens were already coming along just as well. Not having anything else left to plant. I just left them be without tilling them under.

Winter had set in. Carrots, collards turnip greens, and a little lettuce is about all that remained in the garden throughout the winter and they all did fairly well. not the mustard‘s but some how they managed to stay alive. Well some of them anyway.

Winter made its slow progression as January turned into February. Hoping to make some green manure, the mustard‘s eventually got tilled into the ground. I did however leave one small patch that I plan to leave to go to seed to produce seed for the following year‘s garden. A few random plants had already been pulled up and cast off to the side which didn’t get tilled under but we expected they would soon die since their roots were no longer in the ground. these plants had actually already begun to bolt and were producing flowers.

Right around Valentine’s Day 2021, a strong winter storm, the strongest in my 42 years hit. Many people I talked to in their 80s had also never seen a winter storm hit south Arkansas with over 10 inches of snow and low single digit temperatures and for an extended period of time. My garden was covered a deep blanket of snow for over a week solid.

As the snow finally began to melt away I walked through my garden I noticed the mustard greens that had already been pulled up were still blooming.

The plants had been pulled up by their roots. they had been tilled under. They had been stomped on. they had been covered in deep snow and frigid temperatures for an extended period of time separated from the other planets. Still, tiny yellow flowers appeared through the melting snow.

So, as soon as the ground dried out. I tilled them under again!

It’s now April. Most of my summer garden has been planted. One or two rows remain barren. One of those rows was my mustard row.

As I looked at the row today, something caught my eye sticking up out of the dirt. I’d planted okra but it is not okra sporting. It was mustard seed plods.

After all the plants had been through, they still managed to bloom, and produce fruit.

Have you ever been left for dead? Pulled out of your preferred situation. No friends. No honey bees fawning over you while you watch others bask in the sun. Alone. Stomped on. Beaten down.

Gods word says we are to have the faith of a tiny, insignificant mustard seed. God my allow you to be beaten down, trampled over, and discarded by the world. We still have to stay focused on Christ.

The saying goes, bloom where you are planted. Never give up. Stay faithful to God for he has not forgotten you. He cares for you and he has given you a job to do. Get busy doing it.
